Chapter 13
Two weeks off turned into three and it was the best three weeks Iâd ever spent. I woke up the following morning after my abrupt departure from work at precisely the exact time I always did on a workday, even though I had turned off my alarm. I lay awake in bed for about ten minutes and stared at the ceiling wondering what I was going to do with my time. I decided the best course of action was to roll over and go back to sleep. And sleep I did. Clearly, my body was exhausted, because I didnât wake up again until three hours later.
I spent the first day staring off and on at the card Shirley had given me. Iâd never been to a therapist before, so had no first-hand knowledge as to their benefits. Considering I was taking sick time, I knew I needed a doctor to deem me too ill to go to work, even though it was work who suggested I take the time off. I surely wasnât going to use vacation time for this, whatever this was. I knew that eventually, Iâd be able to pick up the phone and call and make that appointment. The bigger problem I had was telling my mother why I wasnât working. I considered telling her I was on vacation, doing absolutely nothing, but knew sheâd detect the lie. After much consideration, I decided the best course of action would be to tell her I was exhausted and needed a couple of weeks off to regroup. I had to do this sooner than later, just in case sheâd called my workplace. If my mother found out I wasnât in via an out-of-office message, sheâd be furious, and Iâd never hear the end of it. Yes, I decided, my first course of action would be to call my mother in Florida, the tropical paradise enjoyed by a majority of Hoosier retirees.
My mom was a talker if I called her at the right time. Dad had died five years ago of a heart attack and, although she waited and mourned the requisite year, it sure didnât take her long to pack her bags, sell the house, and find a suitable condo on the gulf. That woman has a way of moving forward better than anyone I knew. If anyone was capable of putting on her big girl panties and making the most of it, she was. Thatâs why the conversation would be so difficult. She wouldnât understand âtired.â Mother would see âtiredâ as âfeeling sorry for yourselfâ and start asking questions and fill me with advice regarding all the negative things that could transpire from being away from the workplace for so long. It amazed me how much career advice she gave when she never had a job in her life. The more I ruminated, the more I put off the call. After a few hours of procrastination, I put on my big girl panties and picked up the phone.
